Knowledge is the Beginning Directed by Paul Smaczny (Germany, 2005) * 115 minutes * English, Hebrew In the West-Eastern Divan Orchestra, young Arabs and Jews perform side by side and their prejudices are overcome during rehearsals, concerts and after-concert celebrations. The film demonstrates how music can help people from different points of view find common ground. For Daniel Barenboim, conductor, the orchestra is a symbol for creating peace in the Middle East. His controversial friendship with the late Palestinian.born writer and professor Edward Said has both political and musical repercussions.
